THE WIND DOESN'T CARE ABOUT YOUR SCORE
The Leyendero Journal | Issue No. 015 | October 13, 2026
Some days you play the course. Other days, you play everything Mother Nature throws at you.
If you've played enough golf in West Texas, you already know something.
The wind doesn't give a damn about your handicap.
It doesn't care how much you paid for your driver.
It doesn't care that you finally figured out your swing at the driving range yesterday.
And it certainly doesn't care that you were planning on breaking 80 today.
Out here, you can wake up to a beautiful morning, load your clubs, grab some coffee, and head to the course thinking you've got everything figured out.
Then you get to the first tee.
The flag is standing straight out.
The trees are moving.
And somebody in your foursome says those famous words:
"Man, it's not that bad."
¡AHUEVO! Famous last words.
Welcome to West Texas golf, amigos.
OUT HERE, THE WIND IS PART OF THE GAME
Some places have beautiful mountains.
Some have ocean views.
Some have perfectly manicured fairways surrounded by trees that seem to block every little breeze.
We have pump jacks.
Mesquite.
Wide-open fairways.
And wind that apparently woke up angry because somebody forgot to invite it to breakfast.
That's West Texas.
And if you grew up playing golf around here, you learned pretty quickly that conditions aren't always going to cooperate.
A perfectly struck seven iron might come up twenty yards short.
A drive that should have found the middle of the fairway might end up somewhere near the next ZIP code.
And that little three-foot putt?
Well, let's just say Mother Nature occasionally likes to participate in those too.
But here's something I've come to appreciate about golf.
The conditions don't have to be perfect for the round to be worth playing.
YOU CAN'T PLAY YESTERDAY'S ROUND
Every golfer has done it.
You play great one day.
Everything feels right.
The driver is working.
The irons are crisp.
You're rolling putts like you've suddenly figured out the secret to this ridiculous game.
You go home feeling like you've finally turned the corner.
Then you show up the next weekend.
Same clubs.
Same shoes.
Same golfer.
Completely different results.
What the hell happened?
Golf happened.
And sometimes we make it harder on ourselves because we're trying to recreate yesterday instead of playing what's in front of us today.
We want the same swing.
The same distances.
The same results.
But the course doesn't owe us any of that.
Especially when the wind is blowing thirty miles an hour.
Sometimes you've got to take another club.
Sometimes you've got to change the shot.
Sometimes you've got to forget about hitting the perfect ball and concentrate on getting the damn thing somewhere you can find it.
There's no shame in that.
That's playing golf.
THE BEST GOLFERS LEARN TO ADJUST
I've always appreciated golfers who understand this.
Not necessarily the longest hitters.
Not always the guys with the newest equipment.
I'm talking about the golfers who know how to manage a round.
They don't panic when the wind picks up.
They don't lose their minds after one bad hole.
They understand that some days require a little more patience and a lot less ego.
They take what the course gives them.
And when the course doesn't give them much?
They figure something out.
That's a skill you don't necessarily learn from hitting a thousand balls on a perfect driving range.
You learn it by playing.
In the heat.
In the cold.
In the wind.
On those afternoons when absolutely nothing seems to be going your way.
You learn it one round at a time.
And eventually you begin to understand something.
A good round isn't always about how well you hit the ball. Sometimes it's about how well you handle everything else.
THERE'S A LITTLE WEST TEXAS IN THAT LESSON
I think that's one of the things I appreciate most about where we're from.
West Texas has never been a place where everything comes easy.
You deal with the conditions.
You work with what you've got.
You make adjustments.
And you keep moving.
There's a certain pride in that.
Maybe that's why I enjoy the character of golf around here.
It's not always pretty.
It's not always perfect.
But it's real.
You learn to appreciate the good days because you've played through plenty of difficult ones.
You learn to laugh at yourself.
You learn that complaining about the wind for eighteen holes doesn't make it stop blowing.
Trust me.
If it did, half the golfers in Odessa and Midland would've solved that problem years ago.
And somewhere along the way, you stop expecting every round to go exactly as planned.
You just show up ready to play.
DON'T LET ONE BAD HOLE RUIN EIGHTEEN
There's another lesson hidden in all of this.
How many times have you let one bad shot turn into three?
You hit one into trouble.
Get frustrated.
Try to make up for it with some ridiculous recovery shot that even the professionals would think twice about.
Next thing you know, you're writing down a number on your scorecard that looks more like a football score.
We've all been there.
But that shot is gone.
You can't get it back.
You can't change the wind.
You can't change what happened on the last hole.
All you can do is play the next one.
And maybe that's what keeps bringing us back to this game.
Golf gives us another chance.
Another tee box.
Another fairway.
Another opportunity to do something a little better than we did before.
PLAY THE ROUND YOU'VE GOT
So here's my thought for this week.
Quit waiting for the perfect conditions.
The perfect weather.
The perfect swing.
The perfect foursome.
The perfect time.
Go play.
Take the extra club when you need it.
Laugh when the wind sends your ball somewhere you never intended.
Enjoy the challenge.
Enjoy the people you're with.
And when the round starts getting away from you, remember why you showed up in the first place.
Because some of the best golf stories don't come from the rounds where everything went right.
They come from the days when absolutely nothing did.
The wind was howling.
The scorecard was ugly.
Somebody lost half a dozen golf balls.
And somehow, everybody still had a hell of a good time.
That's golf.
That's West Texas.
And that's a little bit of what Leyenda Golf Co. is all about.
You don't get to pick the wind.
You get to choose how you play it.
Keep swinging, amigos.
GOLF HECHO DIFERENTE.
LIVE LEGENDARY.
